Just another name for what sky-is-falling Malthusian globalists used to call dense megacities!
A smart city is not just a city of high rises (although in India a single building maybe called a “city” by our smart netas). It means the supporting infrastructure – water supply, waste disposal, schools, playgrounds, and other civic amenities.
Our useless politicians and government officials are unable to even lay the roads. (They let contractors to privatize roads and collect toll from us. Why did they collect tax from us?) They can’t provide affordable health care or education (IITs/IIMs are getting privatized on the sly). They can’t keep the roads clean or lift garbage regularly. They can’t provide reliable water supply or electricity. They are totally useless. How will they suddenly be able to build 100 smart cities? They will build them, don’t worry, but you and future generations will end up paying for these white elephants. Government will have to mortgage future generations by taking huge loans from multilateral lending institutions such as World Bank and ADB, or endanger public sector institutions such as LIC or SBI. High capital cost projects are a great attraction from corrupt politicians and government officials because of the huge rewards they can reap.
As responsible citizens, you must demand that government fix the existing services if they can. That is what is needed most.
